Friday night, I got to go to the BSO (Baltimore Symphony Orchestra for those of you who may not have experienced the joy of the BSO yet …) and it was SO AWESOME! Every year, the Honors College hosts a few trips to the BSO and we get to buy really cheap tickets for some really cool seats (is there anything better?!). Last year, my mama came with me, but this I topped even that and had BOTH of my parents come and we rode the bus up to the performance with all of the rest of my friends. Ironically enough, my friend and fellow blogger Jason brought his parents too, haha. So we hung out and chatted, ignoring our parents on the bus ride, and hung out with our parents during the concert.
This year’s theme was Map of Asia, by Tan Dun and it was totally cool, BUT, my favorite part was the second song they played. Now, the program said that this song was some dance by a Russian dude, but I know it as the Overture from Kismet. (Someone please tell me you know what I’m talking about or I’ll feel reallllllly dorky right here). Seriously though, I listen to a lot of classical music and I go to a lot of classical performances, but I rarely recognize the music that they play (probably because they figure you’re already listening to Mozart and co. at home and you’ll want to hear something new at the BSO, which is true). SO, it was especially awesome to know every note by heart and catch myself humming along. I shouldn’t have been surprised though, lots of movies/ musicals steal music from the classical world (like Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty came from Tchaikovsky’s waltz of the same name). So here I am, torn between my love for classical music and my love of musical theatre (and yes, I know, Kismet is not really the best example of good musical theatre …) and along comes the BSO, making it okay for me to have both.
HOORAY BSO!
